Terrestrial Laser Scanning

  • This is a term used for a method of distance measurement using laser light. (Just as RADAR is 'Radio Detection and Ranging' ). The journey time of the laser beam, from leaving the instrument to it's return after reflection, is measured. And knowing the speed of light - a distance can be computed. This technology is used in a variety of ways ranging from atmospheric measurements, ground based surveys and aerial 'mapping' type work. Terrestrial Laser Scanning allows a greater density and accuracy of laser reflection points and, therefore, a higher degree of detail of survey is captured using Laser Scanning. Terrestrial Laser Scanning can be used to survey and generate models of terrain and areas where all microforms and complicated terrain features are to be included, especially areas having highly undulating topography. NKPBL is using this technology in Narmada Basin. 3D Models may be easily generated using 3D Scanners.
